Chris Linington was awarded undergraduate and post graduate degrees in Biochemistry from the University of York, but subsequently developed an abiding interest in the immunobiology of multiple sclerosis while working with Professor Hartmut Wekerle in Germany.

His research focuses on understanding how immune and nervous system interactions are involved in driving the development of multiple sclerosis and other neurological diseases. He identified myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein as a dominant target for demyelinating autoantibodies in the central nervous system, and together with Hans Lassmann developed the concept that the development of demyelinating lesions may require both T cell and antibody-dependent effector mechanisms.

He was awarded the Sobek Research Prize for this work in 2003 and more recently identified Neurofascin as a target for autoantibody mediated axonal injury in multiple sclerosis. He is currently based at the University of Glasgow where he holds a chair in Neuroimmunology.
